About Girls On The Lead
Girls on the Lead Young Feminist Movement is a registered Non-Governmental Organization under the Non-Governmental Organizations Regulatory Authority (NGORA) and the Council for Non-Governmental Organizations in Malawi (CONGOMA). Established in 2020, our movement emerged in response to the growing challenges faced by young women challenges that were magnified, though not created, by the COVID-19 pandemic. While the pandemic deepened existing inequalities, the issues that inspired our founding such as limited access to education, economic opportunities, leadership roles, and the high prevalence of gender-based violence and harmful cultural norms were already deeply entrenched in our society.
Girls on the Lead was founded by Susan Salome Chisi, a passionate young feminist who was later joined by six other determined young feminists who shared the same vision of creating an inclusive and just society. Together, they laid the foundation for a grassroots movement dedicated to addressing the systemic barriers that hold young women back. We exist to champion gender equality, advance young women’s rights, and tackle the root causes of women’s marginalization. More than just a movement, we are a platform where young women come together to support one another, amplify their voices, and drive transformative change within their communities and beyond.

Strategic Objectives
Climate Justice and Sustainability
We champion climate justice by involving young women in environmental conservation, sustainable development, and climate action. Through education, advocacy, and hands-on community projects, we aim to elevate young women’s voices in shaping environmental policies and practices, ensuring they are active participants in building a sustainable future.
Digital Inclusion and Innovation
We close the digital gap by enhancing digital literacy and access for young women, equipping them with the skills and resources needed to thrive in the digital era. Through targeted training, access to technology, and the development of online platforms, we drive innovation and create opportunities for young women to excel in the digital landscape.
Health and Wellbeing
We advocate for the comprehensive health and wellbeing of young women by addressing gender-based violence, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), bodily autonomy, menstrual hygiene, and mental health. Through awareness campaigns, support services, educational programs, and policy advocacy, we break stigma, empower young women, and ensure access to essential health services and support.
Economic Empowerment and Inclusion
We promote economic empowerment and inclusion by providing young women with training in entrepreneurship, skills development, and sustainable agricultural practices, including irrigation farming and livestock keeping. By facilitating access to financial resources, mentorship, and market opportunities, we foster financial independence and drive economic growth.
Institutional Development and Sustainability
We focus on strengthening the organization’s sustainability through staff capacity building, diversifying funding streams, and establishing income-generating initiatives. By forming strategic partnerships and building a resilient organizational structure, we reduce dependency on donor funding and ensure long-term growth and impact.
These strategic objectives guide us in aligning our efforts across governance, digital inclusion, health, economic empowerment, and organizational sustainability, creating a comprehensive and transformative strategy for the next five years.
